Sawgrass to Seagrass
Conserving The Everglades From Sawgrass to Seagrass
The Everglades spans approximately 1.5 million acres across southern Florida, making it the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over 350 species of birds, 50 species of reptiles, and numerous endangered animals, including the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee. Water from the Everglades flows southward into Florida Bay, impacting the salinity of estuaries and marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, around 50% of the original Everglades has been lost to urban development, agriculture, and water diversion projects. According to the South Florida Water Management District, nearly 7.9 billion gallons of water are used daily, underscoring the pressing need for effective conservation efforts and sustainable management of this vital resource.
We have partnered up with the Bergeron Everglades Foundation to conserve the Everglades from Sawgrass to Seagrass. Through this partnership, we developed the “Sawgrass to Seagrass” curriculum which takes students on an immersive adventure through the Florida Everglades! Discover the rich tapestry of plants and animals, each playing a vital role in the ecosystem. This program not only highlights the interconnectedness of nature but also ignites a passion for environmental stewardship.
